Dear Future Host Family,
I am writing this letter to you not just as a candidate for an Au-Pair position, but as a person who is genuinely excited about the possibility of becoming a part of your family. I know that inviting someone into your home is a significant decision, and I want to take this opportunity to share with you who I am, what I value, and why I believe we could be a wonderful match.
My name is Conrad Mbewe and I am 22 years old. I hail from Lusaka, Zambia a place that I am proud to call home. I live with my family, e.g., parents and younger brother, and younger sister, and I come from a close-knit, supportive family. My parents have always been my greatest role models, teaching me the values of responsibility, compassion, and hard work.
Growing up, our home was always a hub of activity. We had a tradition of Sunday family dinners where everyone would gather, share stories about their week, and enjoy a meal together. These moments are precious to me, and they’ve instilled in me the belief that family is the foundation of everything. I think this has shaped my desire to be a part of a family that values togetherness and open communication.
My journey with children began long before I considered becoming an Au-Pair. I have always been naturally drawn to them, and I am constantly amazed by their curiosity, honesty, and unique view of the world.
My most significant experience has been babysitting, volunteering or helping raise siblings. For the past 2 years, I have been caring for 2 children in my neighborhood, ages ranging from 5-9. My responsibilities were comprehensive and included:
School Pick-ups/Drop-offs: Ensuring they got to and from school safely.
Homework Help: Assisting with subjects like math, reading, and science, and helping them develop good study habits.
Preparing Meals & Snacks: Making sure they had healthy and nutritious meals.
Organizing Activities: Planning creative and engaging activities, from arts and crafts to outdoor games and sports.
Bedtime Routines: Helping with baths, reading stories, and creating a calm and nurturing environment for sleep.
One story that comes to mind is when I was caring for a 6-year-old boy named Joe. He was very shy and hesitant to try new things. We spent an entire afternoon building a rocket out of cardboard boxes and painting it. The next day, when his parents asked him what he was proud of, he immediately told them about the rocket. Seeing his confidence blossom in that small way was incredibly rewarding. It taught me that sometimes, the smallest act of encouragement can make a world of difference in a child’s life.
Beyond childcare, I believe I have a great deal to offer your family. I see myself as a versatile and enthusiastic addition to your household.
1. A Language and Cultural Exchange: I am fluent in German and have a good command of English. I would be delighted to share my language and culture with your children. We could learn simple phrases together, cook traditional dishes from my country, and celebrate my national holidays. In turn, I am so excited to immerse myself in your culture, learn your language, and understand your way of life.
2. A Helping Hand: I understand that running a household is a team effort. I am happy to help with light household chores related to the children, such as tidying up their rooms, doing their laundry, and cleaning up after meals. I am proactive and don’t need to be asked to do things; if I see something that needs to be done, I’ll do it.
3. A Responsible and Mature Individual: I am reliable, punctual, and have a strong sense of responsibility. You can count on me to follow your guidelines regarding childcare and household routines.
4. A Creative Spark: I love to be creative. I enjoy painting, drawing, reading stories, and coming up with fun games. I also love the outdoors and would love to take your children to the park, the zoo, or on other fun excursions (with your permission, of course).
5. Patience and Empathy: I understand that children are not always easy. They can be tired, grumpy, or frustrated. I pride myself on being a patient and empathetic listener. I believe in talking to children, not just at them, and understanding the root of their feelings.
In Conclusion
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this letter. I know that choosing an Au-Pair is a big decision, and I hope that this letter has given you a good sense of who I am and what I can offer. I am confident that I can bring a positive and nurturing energy to your home and be a reliable and loving presence for your children.
I would love nothing more than to speak with you further, answer any questions you may have, and learn more about your family. I look forward to the possibility of meeting you and your wonderful children.
With warmest regards and much excitement,
Conrad Mbewe
